The Inaugural Conference of China Ningbo-Nottingham International Finance Forum

The rapid economic growth since 1978 has transformed China in many aspects. China’s economy has overtaken Japan and become the second largest in the world; China became the largest exporter by surpassing Germany in 2009; and its official foreign exchange reserve now exceeds US$ 2.4 trillion, the largest in the world for many years. Now China enters a stage of transition from an emerging economy to a new developed economy. At the beginning of this new stage, China faces new challenges: firstly the very successful export-led growth strategy up to now might not sustain fast economic growth in future, China needs to change its growth mode; secondly, huge amount of private capital has been accumulated as a result of fast economic growth, which has not been utilized efficiently in the industrial development. To explore the role of financial industry and macroeconomic policy in promoting the transformation of China’s economy from export-led growth mode to those of developed countries led by domestic demand, especially how to utilize private capital in promoting economic growth and accelerating industrial restructuring and at the same time generate optimal returns. Ningbo Municipal Government, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the University of Nottingham will organize jointly the Inaugural Conference of Ningbo-Nottingham International Finance Forum with the theme “Private Capital and Road to Developed Economy”. The forum consists of two parts, key-note speeches and academic meeting. The key-note speeches (6 September) will be delivered by internationally well-known academics, business leaders and officials from governments and regulatory authorities for high level strategic analysis and policy proposals; the academic meeting is for academics and practitioners to present, exchange and discuss their research results and experiences in finance and macroeconomic policy from specific projects and practical issues.

Ningbo Municipal Government, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the University of Nottingham would like to invite all academics, practitioners and government officials working in finance and economic research and management to participate in the Inaugural Conference of China Ningbo-Nottingham International Finance Forum and present their research, experiences and opinions. It will be held in Ningbo, China, 6-7 September, 2010. The working languages of the forum are English and Chinese with simultaneous interpretation for all plenary sessions.

Ningbo, the dynamic economic centre in the southern wing of Yangtze delta and the second largest port in China, was the birthplace of Chinese modern banking industry. Two of the five most important mountains in Chinese Buddhism, Putuo and Siming mountains, are in the vicinity of Ningbo. Ningbo is also a city with long history starting from Neolithic ages, and rich business and cultural tradition. Shanghai, the largest city and the finance centre of China, is within two and half hour travel by car across the longest transoceanic bridge in the world. Hangzhou, one of the most popular cities for tourists, is also within one hour travel by train.
